It’s wonderful to take an opportunity to celebrate the winners of the Art Students League’s Grants and Scholarships Competition, which has been on a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19. During this pause, the League expanded the program, establishing several new scholarships that were awarded for the first time this year. These include scholarships funded in honor of Ezra Jack Keats, Bruce Dorfman, Richard Tweedy, and more.
Scholarships have a long history at the League. Since our founding nearly 150 years ago, the League has been committed to keeping tuition affordable for anyone who wishes to pursue a fine art education, and to that end, we subsidize tuition for all our students.
In addition, we offer numerous grants for League students, and scholarships that have historically been available only to League students, but which this year are now open to all. These are merit-based opportunities that support full-time study, international travel, or special projects, and are awarded based on the strength of each student’s work. Past recipients of League scholarships have gone on to have major careers, including Norman Rockwell, Cy Twombly, Lee Bontecou, George Morrison, James Rosenquist, Joyce Pensato, and Tshabalala Self. These 2022 winners are in very good company.
Special thanks go to our illustrious judges: Mitra Abbaspour, Will Cotton, Patricia Cronin, David Kassan, James Lee, Eric Shiner, Christian Viveros-Faune, Jasmine Wahi, and Shoshanna Weinberg.
Application information for the next Grants and Scholarships Competition will be announced in January 2023. To learn more, visit the Art Students League’s Grant and Scholarships[1] page.
